Ah, I should of noticed this post sooner as I HAVE played this game on the X box 360 and used all it's functions.
In essence, the game is superior to the movie.. but that's just like saying a rock is better then not having a rock.
Graphically it is fine, there rarely is confusion on what character is what really.
Storyline is essentially similar to the movie but without the massive abundance on human characters and overall it doesn't really matter which side you play as they all sort of end the same.
If anything, the most shining part of this game is the multiplayer but I'll get into that in a bit.
The Controls for the game are simply strange. Using the right trigger acts as how you transform and control the speed of your alternate mode, you can't truly "brake" all that well and mostly just rely on transformation jumps if your in trouble or need to get some distance.
Also in a bit of a strange move, the same button you use for transforming.. is your gun trigger in robot mode. By depressing the left trigger you go into a "Gun" mode which you can cycle between two weapons that over heat, this makes your movements more rigid but by selecting X or Square(for you PS3 fans) You can dash out of the way. However.. while in gun mode to cycle through weapons, Right Bumper/R1 is used to switch guns.
It seems strange and I have seen many screw up due to these controls.
Each character has special abilitys akin to the G1 cartoon though much different.
Optimus Prime specializes in a forcefield which improves his melee damage and in team matches spreads to his allies to reduce damage, the same could be said for Flight mode Optimus.
Megatron has his traditional fusion cannon as his special, it's a rather good one hit kill and sniper weapon but freezes you in place when you operate it.
Other abilitys include healing yourself and allies (faster then waiting for the repair to kick in) quickly venting the heat from your guns, blinding enemys, teleport, deploying missile or laser turrets, overheating enemy weapons,Stunning enemys to leave them open for attacks, gravity bombs and whatever Starscream's Nullray does..
Mostly you'll end up using those in the multiplayer.
The game also includes melee attacks, some which are good, and some that are just dreadful. Each having specific animations and even "Transformation attacks" which are usually rams or Flipkicks.
Now onto the game itself. Each side has 23 missions but you don't have to complete them all, overall most missions require you to just kill hords of enemys mindlessly, race to points, repair satelites or destroy them, and rescue missions for some of the human casts.
Strangely, the Autobot side is harder then the Decepticon side. They have some missions which just seem brutal with the characters they have you select, most notably a BATTLE TO THE DEATH with Devastator. Thats right, no railgun killing him. You have to do it with Bumblebee, luckily Bumblebee is a heck of alot better then his G1 version with missiles and machinecannons..
Decepticon missions.. None of the boss fights were impressive, even fighting the fallen at the end wasn't that difficult and instead of devastator you just blow up a shielded gun turret which I could of done in my sleep.
So, it sounds like a good game right?
Well it's okay. The most frustrating parts of this game are as follows
1:You can not customize ANYTHING in this game. Want to improve the weird controls? You can't. Want to fix the 5.1 Audio? you can't.
2:The Audio in this game is awful in all honesty, to a editing freak like myself it's almost unbareable. The Cutscenes become difficult to hear as some characters sound loud while others make church mice sound like atomic bombs going off in comparison.
3:The Cut scenes, theres not many but.. you can't skip them. And after each mission they "analyze" how you did in the mission which leads to the transformers talking about their progress in the war. At first this seems interesting, but in reality it's just inserted garbage which ends up not even making sense when they get to the main conversation.
4:Unlockables, they're okay but I have a feeling if they didn't waste space with G1 tv episodes they could of inserted more characters into the game like a playable version of Jetfire which now has to be DLC. Some unlockables just seem like such a waste of time as well.
NOW for what you've been waiting for.
Multiplayer!
The multiplayer is strange, it has a feeling of halo and other multiplayers but doesn't stack up against most.. it's rather tacked on at best.
It has 5 modes. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag, Control points, and One shall stand.
Deathmatch:
Pretty much your bread and butter of multiplayer videogames. A buncha people select characters and fight to the death to stack up points. Honestly, kinda boring.
Team Deathmatch:
This is probably the most shining part of the game, but selecting your teams can effect overall how your team wins or not.
Each robot has specific traits, armor, weapons, specials. Combind in well formed teams you can completely dominate the mutliplayer arenas which are essentially just stages from the game(kinda small though still..)
Team Deathmatch works best with having a headset, but like all online games your players may varey. I happened to of been dragged in by a friend to do this so we didn't do that badly, but playing on our own got mixed results from the typical scum of society, intense fanboys roleplaying as their characters.., and the most annoying of children. So finding anyone normal was a task in itself.
Capture the flag:
This should be renamed "Gathering", as essentially you are spilt into teams to gather allspark fragments and put them in a hole without transforming. This then gets down to killing others for allspark fragments and putting them in a hole. over all.. kinda boring.
Control points:
This is more of a memory game, you set up a good team to get control points. The problem with this game is the control points happen to lock preventing you from changing them, so a good team will overwelm a new or bad team instantly. Like.. 10 second games.
One shall stand:
An interesting concept to say the least. You have teams with team leaders, whoever kills that leader then has to spend 60 seconds protecting their leader from enemys or they lose. If their leader lives, then they win. The person who killed the otherside's leader then becomes leader.
So overall.. Team deathmatch is probably the most fun for most. Most active as well in ranked or player matches.
Overall on the game, the graphics are good, the controls are weird, the audio is crap, the mutliplayer has one or two good aspects, and the gameplay itself is repeating and uneven.
I would also like to point out that the voice actors for the robots were good, but the humans were so phoned in. and the Shia voice parts probably the worse as you KNOW in his voice he's on crack. He sounds like Blurr on a caffeine binge while snorting Coke and doing Speed. It is probably the most frantic and horrible voice acting I've heard in my life, and I used to review dubbed anime and bootleg Kung fu flicks.
